  The door was already open. A soldier stood at attention in the doorway. When he spotted Navran his eyes grew wide and he bowed suddenly.

  “My lord and king, we couldn’t drive them off. Our arrows did nothing—”

  “I know,” Navran said. “The Devoured. Follow us. We fly to Virnas, and Ulaur help us to arrive before any of them take the gates.”

  The watch-tower was emptied and they marched down the road. The fire charged across the fields to the west, still driven by the wind.

  They saw no more Devoured that day. They passed two more watch-towers that day and emptied them of soldiers. They marched past sundown, until the moon was high in the sky and walls of Virnas glowered in the darkness. A night and a day of constant travel. Navran had never been so weary. They pounded on the gates, and at the sound of Navran’s voice the gates opened and the soldiers poured through.

  Virnas, Navran thought. Safety. For a little while.
